Description
Handcrafted in Japan by Yasaka. This three-piece Master Set is built around one idea: match the tool to the technique. You pick two cutting lengths and one thinning shear, and all three are forged from ATS-314 cobalt steel at 62-63HRC with a clam-shaped convex edge. On a thinning-focused bench the headline choice is the thinner’s tooth count, because that decides how the set behaves.
-
ATS-314 cobalt steel at 62-63HRC: A hard, fine-grained alloy across all three shears that takes a keen edge and holds it well.
-
Two cutting lengths: Choose two from 4.5”, 5.0”, 5.5”, 6.0” or 7.0” — pair a short detail blade with a longer over-comb one.
-
One thinning shear, your tooth count: 16T, 20T, 30T or 40T, each with its own cut rate and job.
-
Clam-shaped convex edge: A rounded slice geometry on the cutters for smooth blunt lines and slide work.
-
Offset handles: Natural thumb position that keeps the wrist neutral through long sessions.
-
Mirror-polished finish; handmade by Yasaka.

Why a 3-Piece Set
Two cutting lengths mean you stop compromising mid-cut: a longer 6” or 7” for scissor-over-comb and bulk, a shorter 5” or 5.5” for detail and perimeter work. The thinner then handles texture, weight removal and blending — the side of the work where tooth count matters more than blade length.
- Build Your Kit
Classic barber: 7.0” + 5.5” cutting with YS-300 (30T) for balanced, controlled blending on fades. Precision specialist: 6.0” + 5.0” cutting with YS-160 (16T) for aggressive texture on thick hair. High-volume shop: 7.0” + 6.0” cutting with YS-400 (40T) for maximum diffusion blending into clipper work. Salon-barber hybrid: 6.0” + 5.5” cutting with YS-200 (20T) for versatile everyday texture.
- Cutting Shear Sizes
4.5”-5.0”: Detail and precision work, close around ears and neckline. 5.5”-6.0”: Versatile all-rounders for most techniques — the professional standard. 7.0”: Extra reach for scissor-over-comb and efficient bulk work.
- Choosing the Thinner
This is the decision that shapes the set. Higher tooth counts spread the cut and remove less per pass (finer blending); lower counts take coarser, more visible bites:
YS-160 (16 teeth): Coarse texture, about 30-40% removed — heavy weight reduction and visible separation on thick, dense hair. YS-200 (20 teeth): Balanced texture, about 30-40% removed — a versatile all-round texturiser. YS-300 (30 teeth): Blending, about 20-35% removed — softer, more invisible work for natural fade transitions. YS-400 (40 teeth): Fine diffusion, about 40-50% across many fine teeth — soft, seamless edges for melting clipper work.
All thinners use Yasaka’s prism tooth geometry so the hair detaches cleanly rather than folding or pushing. If you mostly debulk thick hair, order the 16T or 20T; if you mostly finish and blend, order the 30T or 40T.
Professional Opinion
“The strength of this set is the thinner, because its tooth count is the choice that defines the kit. The 16T and 20T take coarse, generous bites for real weight removal on thick, dense hair, while the 30T and 40T spread the cut across more teeth for softer, more invisible blending into fades and clipper work — so decide first whether you mostly debulk or mostly finish, and order accordingly. The two ATS-314 cutters cover the rest: a longer one for scissor-over-comb, a shorter one for detail, both on a clam-shaped convex edge that slices rather than pushes, with cobalt edge life that holds up through a high-volume day. The honest caveats are price and that it is right-handed only — this is a serious investment that earns its keep for a barber working back-to-back, not an occasional user. Buy it for the cobalt steel and the matched two-cutters-plus-thinner flexibility, and pick the tooth count to your clientele.”
This set includes 2 pairs of Yasaka Offset Cutting Shears and 1 pair of Yasaka Thinning Shears—configured to your specifications.
