Description
This is the thinner to buy when you want one model that can be matched to the job rather than the hair. The Yasaka YS is a 6” offset thinner, hand-finished in Japan in ATS314 cobalt steel, and it’s sold across four tooth counts — 16, 20, 30 and 40 — so you pick the blade by how much weight you want each pass to take. The teeth are cut as sharpened prisms, which means they grip and shear each strand cleanly instead of folding it, the difference between a clean detach and the tug that gives away a cheaper blade.
Cut rate is set by the tooth count and spacing. Read the variants this way:
- 16 and 20 teeth (≈30–40% cut away): wider gaps between fewer teeth remove more per pass — your chunkier, faster bulk-removal options for taking real weight out of thick, dense heads.
- 30 teeth (≈20–35% cut away): the everyday all-rounder, even weight removal for general thinning and blending across most hair types.
- 40 teeth (≈40–50% cut away): the most teeth packed across the same blade, for working weight out in finer, more controlled passes.
Cut/thinning rate is simply the percentage of hair the blade removes in one closed pass — the lower the rate, the more invisible the blend; the higher the rate, the faster the de-bulk. The offset handle drops the thumb to keep the wrist and elbow neutral through long sessions, and the cobalt steel holds the tooth edges longer than entry-level alloys.
Professional Opinion
“What I rate about the YS is that you choose the cut rate at purchase, not the compromise. The sharpened prism teeth are the standout — they genuinely bite each strand rather than push it, so you get a clean detach with no drag at the points even on wet hair. For most stylists I’d point straight at the 30-tooth: it’s the even, forgiving everyday spec that blends weight out without leaving a shelf. Reach for the 16 or 20-tooth if you’re regularly stripping bulk from thick heads and want fewer, wider teeth doing more per pass, and the 40-tooth if your work is finer, controlled passes. The honest limit is that this is a thinner, full stop — there’s no cutting blade here, so it’s a partner to your shears, not a do-everything tool, and the wider tooth counts will leave more separation than fine hair forgives, so match the blade to the head. As a precise, well-made cobalt thinner you’ll keep for years, it earns its place.”
