Daily (end of each shift)
- Clean blades and teeth with lint-free cloth + approved shear cleaner.
- Dry thoroughly—no moisture left near the pivot.
- Oil the pivot: one drop, open/close gently, wipe excess.
- Inspect teeth for damage, burrs, or misalignment.
- Store in case or magnetic roll; never leave on bench.
Weekly
- Deep-clean teeth with a soft or interdental brush.
- Perform the drop test; adjust tension in quarter turns and note the result.
- Check screw and finger rest integrity.
- Log hours of use/number of thinning services.
- Rotate in backup shears while primary tools rest.
Monthly / Quarterly reminders
- Review sharpening schedule (convex edges every 3–6 months; bevel 6–9 months). Use our sharpening guide.
Pro tips
- Keep silica sachets in cases if you work in humid regions (NSW/QLD).
- Label shears by purpose (curl finishing, slide thinning, barber blending) so they aren’t misused.
- Note any tension changes or drops immediately in the maintenance log.
Consistent care protects your investment, keeps clients comfortable, and ensures every technique performs as intended.
